Concrete Work Up the Hill in Catalina
Concrete contractors in Catalina work a little higher and a little farther out than in most of the Tucson area. This unincorporated community sits at about 3,123 feet, north of Catalina State Park and south of the Biosphere 2 site, and covers about 14 square miles. It had 7,551 residents and 3,427 housing units at the 2020 census. Lots tend to be bigger, many with room for RVs, trailers, workshops or a casita, and the concrete jobs reflect that.
The Golder ranch years
Much of the area traces to one rancher. Lloyd Golder III moved to Tucson from Illinois in 1956 and by 1957 had bought Rancho Vistoso, then a 4,800-acre ranch. In 1959 he bought the 18,000-acre Rail N. Ranch. Golder Dam was built from 1961 to 1964, but decades of legal action later declared it unsafe, and the lakeside community he planned, Lago del Oro, was never built. Catalina State Park sits on former Golder land, and the Twin Lakes and Rail N. Ranch subdivisions date from his era. Lago Del Oro Parkway is the main reminder of the plan that never happened.
Bigger lots, bigger slabs
On these properties we pour RV pads, shop and garage floors, and long driveway sections, as well as patios and walks. Heavy vehicles need more thickness and a better compacted base than a patio, and thickened edges where wheels turn on and off. If you are adding a slab for a future building, we coordinate the size and any embedded items with your plans before we pour.
Slopes, washes and caliche
Catalina's ground slopes up toward the Santa Catalinas, and washes run through many lots. Monsoon runoff moves fast down that slope. We set grade so water passes around and off slabs, and we deepen edges where sheet flow crosses. In unincorporated Pima County, improvements inside a regulatory floodplain, including areas along washes and areas of sheet flooding, need a Floodplain Use Permit before construction. We check that for lots near a wash.
UA Extension says caliche layers, lime-cemented soil from a few inches to several feet thick, are common in southern Arizona. We dig test spots before quoting so you know what is under the slab.
A community getting older
Catalina's median age rose from 39 in 2000 to 53.6 in 2020, and more of our calls here involve safer walks, lower steps and level entries. We pour walks with gentle grades and slip-resistant finishes and can replace steps with a sloped approach where the lot allows.

Catalina Questions
How thick should an RV pad be?
Thicker than a patio, with a well-compacted base and thickened edges where tires roll on. We size it to your vehicle on the estimate visit.
Who handles permits in Catalina?
Catalina is unincorporated, so Pima County handles permits. Lots near washes may need a Floodplain Use Permit.
Can you replace my entry steps with a sloped walk?
Where the grade and lot allow, yes. We measure the rise and lay out a gentle slope with a landing at the door.
