Concrete That Looks Like Stone
Stamped and decorative concrete gives a patio, entry walk or pool surround the look of flagstone, slate, brick or tile, in a single poured slab. Decorative work in Tucson covers more than stamping: integral color mixed into the concrete, stains applied to the surface, saw-cut patterns, and colored borders around plain slabs. People also ask us about staining and coating existing concrete, which we cover on our repair and resurfacing page.
How stamping works
The slab is poured like any other. While the surface is still workable, color is applied, a release agent is spread so the mats do not stick, and the crew presses textured stamping mats into the concrete in sequence. Timing is everything: stamp too early and the pattern slumps, too late and it will not take. In Tucson's summer heat that window shrinks, so we schedule decorative pours early in the morning, keep the slab size matched to the crew, and break large areas into sections when needed.
Choosing a pattern and color
- Flagstone and fieldstone: irregular shapes that fit desert landscaping.
- Slate and ashlar: squared, cut-stone looks for a more formal patio.
- Brick and cobble: good for borders, walks and entries.
- Wood plank: a deck look without wood that dries and splits.
For color, lighter tans, buffs and warm grays reflect more sun and stay cooler underfoot than dark charcoals or deep reds. A second release color adds depth and makes the stone pattern more convincing.
Sealing in the desert
Stamped concrete is sealed to protect the color and the texture. HomeGuide's stamped patio guide puts sealing at $1 to $3 a square foot and recommends resealing every 2 to 3 years to keep color from fading. Strong ultraviolet light is the main thing that dulls a decorative surface here, so keeping up with resealing matters more than in cloudier places. On surfaces around pools, we add a grit to the sealer for better footing.
Stamped concrete or pavers?
HomeGuide's comparison lists stamped concrete at about $8 to $19 a square foot installed and paver patios at $10 to $17. Pavers can be lifted and replaced one at a time and do not need sealing. Stamped concrete has no joints for weeds and ants, cleans easily, and is a single solid surface, but it needs resealing and is harder to patch invisibly. We will talk through both honestly.
Simpler decorative options
Not every project needs full stamping. A plain broom-finished slab with a stamped or colored border costs less and still looks finished. Saw-cut patterns, such as a large tile grid, can be cut into plain or stained concrete. Acid or water-based stains give a mottled, variegated look that suits desert homes.
Decorative Options We Offer
Choose one, or combine several on the same project.

Flagstone, slate, ashlar, brick, cobble and wood-plank textures pressed into fresh concrete.
Integral color
Pigment mixed into the concrete so the color runs through the slab.
Release and accent colors
A second color that settles into the texture for depth.
Stains
Surface stains for a mottled, natural look on new or sound existing concrete.
Borders and saw-cut designs
Stamped or colored bands and cut patterns around plain slabs.

Stamped & Decorative Concrete Questions
Does stamped concrete get slippery?
A sealed, smooth surface can be slick when wet. We use textured patterns and add grit to the sealer on pool decks, steps and walks so the surface grips.
How often does stamped concrete need sealing?
HomeGuide recommends resealing every 2 to 3 years. In strong desert sun, staying on that schedule keeps the color from fading and protects the texture.
Can you stamp or stain my existing patio?
Existing concrete cannot be stamped, but a sound slab can be stained, or covered with a stamped overlay. See our repair and resurfacing page for those options.
How long before I can use a stamped patio?
HomeGuide gives 7 to 10 days for stamped concrete to cure before regular use. Light foot traffic is usually fine sooner; we give you exact dates.
